60 years ago today the Treaty of Rome was signed bringing with it decades of prosperity and peace to a continent that was still emerging from the ravages of WWII.
This little flawed and fragile institution was created after a millenium of people on the continent butchering and killing each other.It is a brilliant and simple idea and whats more it has worked brilliantly with a massive reduction in murders by one set of Europeans killing another set of Europeans as was the norm for over a 1000 years. It may be flawed, inefficicient and needs a jolly good clean up but the alternative is much much uglier.
This brilliant, infant idea, for all its flaws and there are many,
its short sightedness of what is happening in brussels in its own backyard and actually some serious selfishness of some of its representatives, it works, it has worked and the killing has stopped. Europeans are actually richer and more confortable than any humans or even animals in history.
It is unequal and it is flawed and it lacks a decent secretariat and proper and fair borders, but it does work at what it does best which is keeping the peace.
Lets keep it and reform it from within and clean it up but lets not kill this fragile and important baby. It is indeed very young. It does amazing environmental things and amazing social justice things, quite unique, lets let it grow up -answer for its own mistakes and mismanagement but lets support it when it needs us most.
